Art Deco picture wall lights by NAPAKO

Era: 1930s Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Beginning life in former Czechoslovakia, these Art Deco wall lights were manufactured in the 1930s by renowned design collective NAPAKO - authenticated by the manufacturer’s label on reverse (not visible). Restored to retain their original chrome-plated steel components and fitted with a new integral switch. They rotate to work as either an upward or down lighter, ideal for illuminating artwork, bedside tables or dining booths in their next chapter.

Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoration

Once a light has undergone preparatory treatment and any degraded surfaces have been removed, we begin the journey to bring it back to life. At skinflint the work we do is about protecting and preserving the individual heritage of each piece that we salvage. So instead of repainting surfaces, with ferrous metals such as iron and steel, we linish the surface on large rotating wire wheels to add depth and grain, highlighting any original casting details to bring out the light’s character through surface and patina.

Manufacturer: NAPAKO

NAPAKO is a lighting manufacturer founded in 1919 in Prague, former Czechoslovakia. Considered a collective NAPAKO worked alongside various designers in the early twentieth century, most notably with highly acclaimed designer Josef Hurka. Hurka began his career designing electrical appliances before specialising in household lighting, including ceiling and floor lamps. Napako pieces designed by Hurka are considered collectibles and are to this day, highly sought after and awarded in the lighting design industry.
