Beginning its story in Wigan, UK, this 1930s bulkhead was originally designed by Heyes & Co, specialists in explosion-proof industrial lighting. A cast iron enclosure with its original maker’s mark, ‘The Wigan’ features a striking prismatic lens, offering a distinctive silhouette and illumination. A wonderful statement piece for circulation areas.

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

Vintage lights may sound delicate in nature. But in the mid-20th Century, lights were manufactured with care and designed to last. Prominent manufacturer’s markings help us identify each light’s accurate origin and era so that each little piece of history can be preserved through sensitive restoration techniques.

We can't be certain of the exact origins of Heyes and Co. of Water Heyes Electrical Works, Wigan, but we think the company was established in the early part of the 20th century with the first records we’ve uncovered being dated 1922. For over 50 years Heyes specialised in the design and manufacture of industrial and explosion proof lighting intended for use in extreme locations such as oil refineries and the mining industry. Then, in 1986 the company was acquired by Petrel Ltd and the Heyes name disappeared.
