1920s Czech opaline chandelier

Beginning their journey in a hotel lobby in Brno, this 1920s opaline chandelier was born during former Czechoslovakia’s Golden Age when Art Deco flourished in the newly independent state. Three open-topped glass globes provide a soft and even glow when illuminated, supported by chrome-plated arms and a stepped central baluster. This one-off chandelier is perfect for dining or circulation areas.

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoration

At skinflint restoring a light doesn’t necessarily mean making it ‘like new’. We often preserve the visible signs of age and interesting spots of wear and patina in a testament to the light’s first story. Other times we might reveal the manufacturer’s marks or bare metal, accentuating its build and design. Whatever the restoration process, you can be sure you are receiving a truly unique vintage light fitting.

Manufacturer: NAPAKO

NAPAKO is a lighting manufacturer founded in 1919 in Prague, former Czechoslovakia. Considered a collective NAPAKO worked alongside various designers in the early twentieth century, most notably with highly acclaimed designer Josef Hurka. Hurka began his career designing electrical appliances before specialising in household lighting, including ceiling and floor lamps. Napako pieces designed by Hurka are considered collectibles and are to this day, highly sought after and awarded in the lighting design industry.
