Lit by skinflint: Ripley
A new adaptation of Patricia Highsmith’s Ripley has hit Netflix, with Andrew Scott stepping into the shoes of the eponymous grifter. Shot in black and white, this visually stunning piece takes place over eight episodes in New York, Atrani, Venice, and Rome. Despite the familiar plot, the series breathes new life into the story.
Hired under false pretence by a wealthy man to return his son from Atrani, Ripley embarks on a long journey of deceit and intrigue, set against the beautiful backdrop of 1960s Italy.
A number of our vintage lights were hired for this series, including our Russian 1960s surgical lamp, our 1930s Austrian medical lamp, our 1930s Czech globes, and our 1920s GECoRAY wall lights. Each one carefully restored for modern-day use on set, ready to bring authenticity to the series.
Our Russian 1960s surgical lamp steals the show in the morgue, its large shade and reflectors creating a striking silhouette in the black and white visuals. The circular shade stands out against the square geometric shapes in the room, the cinematography perfectly framing the light. Our 1930s Austrian medical lamp can also be spotted in the morgue, its polished aluminium shade complementing the medical set design.
