Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoration

Different materials require different processes. At skinflint we are fascinated by interesting surfaces and patinas, that’s why we tend not to repaint our lights as this can make them look too ‘new’ and they lose some of their of individuality. The vitreous enamelled steel shades so small signs of wear and are fitted with the original convex glass screens. The original factory finish has been retained to the two part upper gallery, which features original manufacturers detailing, and an interesting surface patina.

Each light is supplied with a new screw (E27) lamp holder, 2mtrs of suspension chain, elephant grey braided cable and ceiling mounting plate. (If you would prefer another colour cable, wire suspension or an E26 lamp holder for use in the USA, please just ask).
