Reclaimed railway light lenses (V2)

Era: 1950s Origin: Hungary

Reclaimed from decommissioned railway signalling equipment in Hungary, these red prismatic glass lenses were originally designed to guide train drivers into station safely. Now converted for use, they are a real conversation piece - perfect for making a statement in small spaces, or suspended in groups in varying colours (take a look at the turquoise and blue versions here).

We salvage high volumes of industrial and decorative lighting from this landlocked former Eastern Bloc country. Hungarian industrial enamel shades are often available in blue or white, whereas the decorative glassware has more of a clean line and timeless design. In the mid to late 20th century, the Communist east produced a wide variety of lights for both industrial, commercial and residential applications often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage.

Restoration

Once a light has undergone preparatory treatment and the degraded surface has been removed, the path is clear for us to bring it back to life. At skinflint we tend not to repaint surfaces, this would make the lights look too ‘new’ and they’d lose some of their individuality. So, with ferrous metals such as iron and steel, we wax-polish the surface on large rotating cotton wheels adding shine, grain and highlights to the casting details and bringing out the light’s character through surface and patina.

Each light is supplied with a new bayonet (B22) lamp holder, 2mtrs of elephant grey braided cable and ceiling mounting plate. If you would prefer another colour cable please just ask.
