Art Deco Czech cubed ceiling lights

This one-off ceiling light is Art Deco through and through. Originally manufactured in former Czechoslovakia in the 1930s, it once illuminated a private residence. An original chrome plated gallery houses three striking opaline cubes, providing a soft glow of illumination when lit. Great for bathrooms, counters and small spaces.

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoration

Once we’ve salvaged a collection of lights, we bring them home to our studio and begin the slow process of restoration. Each light is disassembled and we examine every component for damage and flaws, so we know which can be kept, and which need to be replaced. We then hand over to our experts – in-house and locally – to carefully restore each component by hand. That often begins with soda-blasting (an environmentally friendly way to remove old paint), before hand-polishing, lacquering and rewiring.
