Prometheus floor light

An extremely rare one-off floor light originally manufactured by Prometheus Electric Corporation in 1910 in the U.S, New York. Once used as a medical lamp to perform infrared heat treatment, now sensitively restored for use as a floor light. Featuring all original components including a polished aluminium shade, chrome plated arm and a stand featuring an original paint finish. Considered a true collector's piece with a fascinating history and a story to tell.

Unlike the communist Eastern Bloc countries, lighting design in mid-century U.S.A. benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time designing and producing similar products for the same market, often with only slight differences in their style. Due to the location we rarely have the opportunity to reclaim and restore light fixtures from the U.S.A., but some of our perennial favourites are the old signal lights that adorned the highways of the midwest. We reconfigure and restore these timeless classics into functional pendant lights, for both residential and commercial use.

This means we are independently audited, approved and verified at every stage to ensure that all of our lights are expertly restored to modern standards, using brand new EN60598-certified components for faultless functionality. So while our lights are unique pieces of history, you can rest assured that their wiring and components are anything but.

Lamps like these were used by medical professionals to heal injuries and illnesses through infrared heat rays. The effect mimicked the sensation of the warmth of the sun on the skin, treating sore joints, and even conditions like arthritis.

Specialising in the manufacture of household electrics, the team focused their efforts on stoves and irons, as well as innovative technologies for medical lights used in infrared therapy. Ceasing production by 1920, Prometheus pieces are now considered collectible items.
