1920s Czech art deco chandelier

Starting life during the glitz and glamour of the 1920s, this opaline chandelier once illuminated private residences in Prague, former Czechoslovakia. Art Deco by design, four tinted opaline globes provide a soft glow when illuminated, supported by decorative chrome-plated arms. A central baluster and rod feature patina indicative of its rich 100 year history. Perfect for making a statement in hallways and living rooms.

Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoration

Once we’ve salvaged a collection of lights, we bring them home to our studio and begin the meticulous process of restoration. Each light is disassembled and we examine every component for damage and flaws, so we know which can be kept, and which need to be replaced. We then hand over to our experts – in-house and locally – to carefully restore each component by hand. That might include soda-blasting (an environmentally friendly way to remove old paint), before hand-polishing, lacquering and rewiring.
