An original table lamp by Kandem, Type 03 4.4., made in 1952. The light has been restored by hand with the original finish retained. Comprising a black bakelite shade and a pressed black glass base - an innovation of its time.​​​​​​

Origin: Germany

German designs are famed for their clean lined and well engineered approach. The Bauhaus School played a major role in combining design with engineering during the late 1920s and early 1930s. A number of lights we salvage were influenced by Bauhaus School design. From the mid to late 20th century, Communist East Germany produced a wide variety of lights for both industrial, commercial and residential applications, often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage.

Restoration

Original cast makers marks can be found on the Bakelite shade and underside of the base. The design allows a great deal of movement with a ball and socket joint at both the shade and base, along with an integrated toggle switch. We take the time to investigate a lights history, studying old catalogues for clues and assembling the whole story. The extract shown, dated 1952, features the original specification of the light by the manufacturer.

Supplied tested and rewired with a new bayonet (B22) lamp holder and two metres of black twisted braided cable, toggle switch and plug.

Manufacturer: Kandem

German lamp manufacturer Kandem was founded in Leipzig in 1889. From its establishment in 1919 Kandem was always closely connected with the Bauhaus school, purchasing and manufacturing many of the students’ designs. Through that connection they encountered student and designer Marianne Brandt. Brandt designed many household items including what was to become a modern classic - The Kandem Desk Light. Although the Kandem- Bauhaus relationship ended in 1933 when the school was closed, production of the lamps continued and the designs are now widely considered to be benchmarks in design history.
