Vintage table lamp by Perihel

A vintage 1950s medical therapy lamp by British manufacture 'Perihel'. With twin polished aluminium ribbed shades on copper and brass arms, which are mounted upon a brushed and lacquered steel base with the original manufactures plaque.

Origin: UK

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

There is full rotation and articulation of both arms, height adjustable, and individual toggle switches for both lamps. At skinflint all original electrical elements are removed and replaced with brand new, certified components (EN60598 if your electrician asks). Any pre-wired lights are then rewired, tested and certified in line with electrical safety standards BS EN 60598. That way you have a light you can rely on every day, for decades to come.

Manufacturer: Perihel

Perihel was a highly successful manufacturer of light therapy lamps for both professional and home use, manufacturing elegant light therapy lamps for the clinic and the home. We are unsure of their exact origins but from advertising literature we have in our own archive we can be sure that in the 1930s the company was based in Germany with production in Prague. Then, again based on its product pamphlets, by the 1940s and 1950s it had bases in the UK at Edge Street and Rabbit Row in London.
