Salvaged American Bartow runway light

The Bartow is a rare find salvaged from the USA. The ex-military, portable runway light was used extensively on army runways during the 1940s, often as approach lights atop poles. Due to their elevated runway position, most were sadly destroyed and there are few examples surviving today.

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

The light comprises a substantial steel enclosure and two-part Frensnel Lens with many details making this a real feature piece. The original manufacturer's finish has been retained adding character, with original branding and labelling for instructions for use. The original runway-side diffusion element is still present on the outer glass prism, with the base design allowing the lamp to be rotated 360 degrees.

The light is supplied tested and rewired with a new screw (E27) lamp holder, 3 meters elephant grey braided cable, inline foot switch and a plug.
