Oxidised Eastern Bloc pendant lights

Era: 1950s Origin: Czechoslovakia (former)

Salvaged from state-owned factories in former Czechoslovakia, these 1950s industrial pendants witnessed the complex political climate of 20th century occupied Eastern Europe. A prismatic glass shade produces a bright glow when illuminated, complimented by an oxidised two-part steel gallery, bringing added warmth. Great in rows above dining areas in bars and restaurants.

Much of the lighting we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc was produced in the manufacturing powerhouses of former Czechoslovakia. Under Communist rule the same design was often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage. The country is also famed for its beautiful glassware, with both wall and ceiling opaline glass lights often being used in public and residential settings, such as housing blocks and schools.

Restoration

Once a light has undergone preparatory treatment and the degraded surface has been removed, we then begin the journey to bring it back to life. At skinflint we tend not to repaint surfaces, this would make the lights look too ‘new’ and they’d lose some of their individuality. So, with ferrous metals such as iron and steel, we linish the surface on large rotating wire wheels adding depth, grain and highlights to the casting details and bringing out the light’s character through surface and patina.

Each light is supplied with a new screw (E27) lamp holder, 2mtrs of suspension chain, elephant grey braided cable and ceiling mounting plate. If you would prefer another colour cable, please just ask.
