1950s G.E.C taxiway pendant lights

1950s taxiway lights salvaged from RAF Scampton, once originally installed within the aircraft runways. Made by renowned British manufacturer G.E.C., they have been restored and converted to feature pendant lights with a two-part oxidised and powder-coated steel enclosure. The omni-directional glass lens enhances light distribution to the side.

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

Each vintage light that we salvage is sensitively refurbished and brought back to life by our lighting experts. With these particular taxiway lights, the degraded surfaces were first removed, with the cast steel enclosure purposely, and individually, then oxidised and sealed to maintain its rich surface patina. All the original elements of the light have been retained, including the prismatic refractors and the cast detailing showing the manufacturer’s details: 'G.E.C AZ 201'.
