1940s GEC bulkhead lights

Early 1940s angled bulkhead lights salvaged from an oak-beamed church in Surrey, UK, where they were once installed as up-lighters. Elegantly refined wall lights with a simple two-part polished aluminium enclosure, they feature original cast detailings to the rear and are complete with their original Armourguard glass and reflectors.

Lighting design in the UK benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time, designing and producing similar products for the same market. Often with only slight differences in their style, they constantly upgraded and improved their original designs. The products we salvage come from the old industrial heartland of England. This area of the UK was once the boiler room of the British economy - from the potteries of Stoke, through the engineering works of Birmingham, to the wool, textile and cotton mills of Oldham and Manchester.

Restoration

Once a light has undergone preparatory treatment and its degraded surface has been removed, our team at skinflint patiently and sensitively restore each light by hand. The work we do is based on respecting and preserving the heritage of each piece. The catalogue featured is from our own internal archive, dated 1938, and features a slightly earlier variant of the light. Initially designed as garage or locomotive pit lighting, we salvaged these particular lights from a church in Surrey.
