XL Polish factory lights

XL imposing industrial pendant lights salvaged from a factory in the South of Gdansk, Poland. Sensitively refurbished by hand the steel body has been brushed and lacquered, sealing the metal from further degradation, with the original Fresnel convex glass lens.

Many of the products we salvage and restore from the former Eastern Bloc were produced in Poland. As with the majority of lights designed and manufactured under Communist rule - during the period from the end of the Second World War to the fall of the Berlin wall - they are defined by a clean industrial aesthetic, with the same design often manufactured in three scaled versions to cater for varying bulb wattage.

Restoration

Where possible we retain the original finish of a light - it is part of its history and emphasises its heritage. However, sometimes leaving a surface as we find it just isn’t possible. Some lights made from non-ferrous metals, such as copper, arrive so severely degraded we need to remove their outer layers to allow any further surface treatment to be applied. We do this with a technique known as ‘aqua blasting’. Water is mixed with glass particles and applied under high pressure to the surface to ‘blast’ the layer of degradation away - leaving the surface clean for the next stage in restoration.

Each light is supplied with new bayonet (B22) lamp holder, 2mtrs of suspension chain, elephant grey braided cable and ceiling mounting plate. (If you would prefer another colour cable, or wire suspension, please let us know).
