Coffee shop vintage industrial lighting

3 years ago Commercial

Set in the historic town of Alresford in Hampshire, Party at the Mill is the first venture outside London for specialist coffee roaster The Roasting Party. As they step out of the capital, they have not failed to provide a unique experience in a location full of rich history in a converted mill next to the Watercress Line steam railway.

The interior design was completed in-house by The Roasting Party alongside independent lighting designers JPLD. With a minimal aesthetic, the interior is a clean and calming space with whitewashed walls throughout. Natural elements incorporated into the design with glimpses of natural pale wood in the furniture help to retain a sense of serenity.

Speaking about the project, JPLD founder James Poore said: “As a final indulgence we contacted the wonderful team at skinflint and selected a trio of prismatic railway lights salvaged from decommissioned signalling equipment in Hungary.”

JPLD worked closely with The Roasting Party to create the design brief, and due to time restrictions during the pandemic the project was turned around in just two months. Taking inspiration from both the building’s industrial heritage as a mill and its proximity to the steam railway, the team at JPLD incorporated vintage light fixtures to celebrate the building’s history, with three of skinflint’s railway signal lights suspended from the high ceiling, providing a focal point for the seating area below.

“These stunning statement luminaries give a nod to both the industrial and railway heritage and a wonderful talking point in the space,” says James.
