Florian Gadsby, London
Step inside the captivating North London studio of ceramicist sensation Florian Gadsby - the potter behind our latest vintage lighting collaboration The Artist’s Edit, a specially curated collection of lights perfectly suited to creative spaces. Florian crafts wheel-thrown decorative and functional vessels using iron-rich stoneware clay, all in his signature colour palette of blues, greys and greens. From his meticulously ordered studio situated in an old industrial laundry, Florian documents his hits (and misses) for his large social media following, and his covetable collections sell out in seconds. Lighting is crucial to his craft, which is why we’re so excited to have supplied a collection of our restored original vintage lights to illuminate his creative practice.
Florian’s chosen vintage lights mirror his aesthetic for clean, architectural silhouettes, as well as his penchant for authentic details and polished metalwork. The functional lights are, in his words, “well designed and galvanising” as well as feeling “at home alongside his carefully put-together pottery”. Suspended above the potter’s wheel is a 1950s airfield landing light salvaged from an RAF base in Northwest Wales, with further adjustable task lighting provided by an original 1960s counterbalance architect’s lamp by renowned British Manufacturer Hadrill & Horstmann. A mid-century Polish street pendant light and a 1940s airfield taxiway light, salvaged from the same RAF site previously mentioned, provide ambient lighting for the wider studio space. Perfectly framed within the archway adjoining the utility room is one of our 1960s Eastern Bloc industrial pendants complete with original manufacturer’s labels and detailing. You’ll also find one of our 1950s machinist wall lights providing illumination for Florian’s tool board and clean-down station.
Speaking about his lights and the collaboration, Florian says: “There’s beauty in well-crafted pieces, in the fine details, the patina, how they’ve been used. It’s what got me into making pottery to begin with; as handmade pots age with use, they chip, stain, crackle, just like clothes or an old cooking pan or a vintage light I suppose.”
The Artist's Edit vintage lighting collection will launch on our website on Wednesday 31st July. A social giveaway will also launch on the 2nd August. Enter here! You can read more about Florian in our Q&A on our blog.
